Product Details

The Wunderpus Octopus is a rare and highly sought-after species, recognized for its beautiful patterns and distinct coloration. With its reddish-brown body covered in white or cream-colored spots and bands, this octopus has a striking, almost mesmerizing appearance. Known for its intelligence and highly adaptive camouflage, the Wunderpus Octopus is a challenging species to care for and is best suited for expert-level aquarists who can meet its specialized needs.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 18 inches (with arms extended).
  • Tank Size: 50 gallons minimum; requires a well-sealed tank with ample rockwork for hiding and exploring.
  • Diet: Carnivorous; primarily feeds on small crustaceans, mollusks, and occasionally fish. In captivity, it can be fed live or frozen foods, such as crabs, shrimp, and small fish. Target feeding with long tongs is recommended to mimic natural hunting behaviors.
  • Water Temp: 72-78°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Solitary; best kept alone in a species-specific tank due to its sensitivity and need for a controlled environment.
  • Skill Level: Expert-only; requires highly specialized care, stable water conditions, and a secure tank setup. This octopus is also sensitive to handling and stress, so experience with cephalopods is essential.
  • Reef Compatibility: Not reef-safe; while it will not harm corals directly, it may consume or disturb small invertebrates and is best suited for a species-specific setup.

Special Consideration - Sensitive and Highly Intelligent
The Wunderpus Octopus is highly sensitive to water quality and environmental changes. This species requires a mature, stable tank with tightly sealed lids to prevent escape, as octopuses are skilled escape artists. Additionally, it is an intelligent species that benefits from environmental enrichment and a low-stress environment.

Compatibility
This octopus is best housed alone in a species-specific tank, as it is highly sensitive to stress and disturbance. It should not be kept with other fish or invertebrates that may compete for space or resources.

Coloration

  • Indo-Pacific Region: The Wunderpus Octopus has a distinctive reddish-brown body with striking white or cream-colored bands and spots. This unique coloration and intricate pattern make it one of the most photogenic marine species and contribute to its popularity among expert aquarists.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: Native to the Indo-Pacific, particularly in shallow sandy or muddy areas near coral reefs, where it forages for small crustaceans and other prey. It thrives in aquariums with a sandy substrate and rock structures to mimic its natural environment.
