Vlamingi Tang (Naso Vlamingii)
Product Details

The Vlamingi Tang is a strikingly large and beautifully colored species, well-suited for public aquariums or very large home setups. Known for its iridescent blue and green body, bold spots, and distinct streamers on adult males, the Vlamingi Tang is a peaceful yet active swimmer. Due to its size and space requirements, it is best suited for experienced aquarists with the capacity to provide a spacious and stable environment.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 24 inches.
  • Tank Size: 300 gallons minimum; requires a very large tank with ample open swimming space and rockwork for grazing.
  • Diet: Herbivorous; primarily feeds on algae in the wild. In captivity, it thrives on a diet of marine algae, seaweed sheets (nori), spirulina, and herbivore pellets. Supplement occasionally with mysis shrimp or brine shrimp as a treat.
  • Water Temp: 72-78°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Peaceful; generally non-aggressive, but due to its size, it should be housed with similarly sized tankmates or in community tanks with ample space.
  • Skill Level: Advanced; requires a very large, stable aquarium environment with consistent feeding and excellent water quality.
  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe; does not harm corals or invertebrates and is excellent for algae control in large reef setups.

Special Requirement - Extremely Large Aquariums
The Vlamingi Tang grows up to 24 inches in length and requires a very large tank to accommodate its active swimming behavior and size. Open water swimming space, combined with ample live rock for grazing, is essential for its well-being.

Compatibility
This tang is peaceful and thrives in community setups with other large, non-aggressive tankmates. It can coexist with other tangs if housed in a sufficiently spacious aquarium.

Coloration

  • Indo-Pacific Region: The Vlamingi Tang displays a shimmering blue and green body with dark spots and patterns. Mature males develop long, flowing tail streamers, adding elegance to their appearance. Its coloration becomes more vibrant as it matures, especially in larger tanks with optimal conditions.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: Found in the Indo-Pacific, particularly around coral reefs and open lagoons. It is often seen grazing on algae in shallow, current-rich areas. In aquariums, it requires stable conditions, ample algae for grazing, and a well-oxygenated setup.
