Tonga Fighting Conch (Strombus gibberulus)
Product Details

The Tonga Fighting Conch is a small, active conch species well-loved for its sand-sifting behavior and hardy nature. With its distinct spiraled shell and large "eye-like" stalks, this conch adds both aesthetic interest and functionality to the tank. The Tonga Fighting Conch is an excellent sand-bed cleaner, feeding on detritus, algae, and leftover food while aerating the substrate. Its peaceful disposition makes it an ideal addition to most reef and fish-only tanks.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 2 inches.
  • Tank Size: 20 gallons minimum; best suited for tanks with sandy substrates for foraging.
  • Diet: Omnivorous; primarily feeds on detritus, algae, and uneaten food in the sand. It may accept supplemental feedings of sinking pellets or algae wafers if natural food sources are limited.
  • Water Temp: 72-78°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Peaceful; generally non-aggressive and compatible with a variety of tankmates.
  • Skill Level: Beginner; hardy and easy to care for, making it an excellent choice for aquarists of all levels.
  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe; does not harm corals or other invertebrates, making it a valuable addition to reef tanks as part of the cleanup crew.

Special Feature - Sand-Sifting Behavior
The Tonga Fighting Conch is an active sand-sifter that helps aerate the substrate, which prevents compaction and contributes to overall tank cleanliness. This natural behavior also reduces the buildup of waste and detritus in the sand.

Compatibility
This conch is peaceful and well-suited for most reef tanks. However, avoid housing it with large, predatory species that may disturb or prey on smaller invertebrates.

Coloration

  • Indo-Pacific Region: The Tonga Fighting Conch has a spiraled, light brown shell with white and tan markings, adding a natural and subtle aesthetic to the tank. Its distinctive shell and eye stalks give it a unique appearance that stands out in the substrate.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: Native to the Indo-Pacific, particularly around sandy reef zones where it forages for food in the substrate. In aquariums, it thrives in tanks with a stable sandy substrate and moderate flow.
