Product Details

The Skunk Tilefish is a beautiful and active deep-water species known for its sleek body and unique coloration. Its white body is highlighted by a bold stripe running down its back, giving it the "skunk" appearance. This species is prized for its graceful swimming and peaceful nature, making it a wonderful addition to a well-established reef tank or community marine aquarium. However, it is sensitive to changes in water quality and requires a stable environment, making it more suitable for experienced aquarists.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 5 inches.
  • Tank Size: 75 gallons minimum; a larger tank with plenty of open swimming space and hiding spots is recommended for this active swimmer.
  • Diet: Carnivorous; feeds on a variety of meaty foods, including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Offering a varied diet with high-quality frozen and pellet foods ensures vibrant coloration and health.
  • Water Temp: 72-78°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Peaceful; generally gets along well with other peaceful tankmates but can be shy or timid, especially when first introduced. It is best kept with non-aggressive species that won't outcompete it for food.
  • Skill Level: Advanced; due to its sensitivity to water quality and specific care needs, the Skunk Tilefish is best suited for experienced aquarists.
  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe; does not harm corals or invertebrates, making it a great choice for peaceful reef tanks. However, it requires pristine water conditions and a well-secured tank.

Special Requirement - Secure Lid
The Skunk Tilefish is a known jumper, particularly when startled or stressed. It is essential to have a secure, tightly fitted lid on the aquarium to prevent the fish from leaping out of the tank. Reducing stress by providing plenty of hiding spots and low-stress tankmates will also help keep the fish comfortable.

Coloration

  • Indo-Pacific Region: The Skunk Tilefish has a slender, white body with a distinct black or dark-colored stripe running down its back, giving it its unique "skunk" appearance. Its sleek, streamlined body and graceful swimming make it a visually captivating fish.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: Native to the deep waters of the Indo-Pacific, the Skunk Tilefish is commonly found around coral reefs and rocky substrates. It prefers dimly lit environments and spends much of its time swimming near the substrate or darting between rocky outcrops.
