Product Details

The Radiant Wrasse is a strikingly colorful fish native to the waters of the Western Indian Ocean. Its vibrant colors include bright green, yellow, and orange, with shimmering blue accents along its body, making it a favorite among marine aquarium enthusiasts. This active swimmer is also known for its usefulness in controlling pests like bristle worms, making it both a beautiful and beneficial addition to reef aquariums.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 5 inches.
  • Tank Size: 50 gallons minimum; larger tanks are recommended to provide ample swimming space.
  • Diet: Carnivorous; primarily feeds on small invertebrates, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and other high-quality frozen foods. A varied diet will help maintain its bright coloration and health.
  • Water Temp: 74-78°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Generally peaceful, but may show territorial behavior towards other wrasses. Best kept with peaceful tankmates.
  • Skill Level: Intermediate; requires stable water conditions and proper acclimation to ensure success in captivity.
  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe; does not harm corals or invertebrates and is beneficial for controlling pests such as bristle worms.

Special Requirement - Sand Substrate and Secure Lid
Radiant Wrasses require a sandy substrate in the aquarium, as they bury themselves in the sand to sleep and seek refuge when startled or stressed. Providing soft sand is crucial for their well-being. Additionally, these wrasses are known jumpers, so a secure, tightly fitted lid is essential to prevent them from jumping out of the tank.

Color Variation by Locality

  • Western Indian Ocean: Specimens from this region typically display a mix of green, yellow, and orange hues, with blue accents along their fins and body. Color intensity may vary slightly based on individual genetics and environmental conditions.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: The Radiant Wrasse is native to the coral reefs of the Western Indian Ocean, particularly around Eastern Africa, including the Seychelles and Madagascar. They thrive in shallow waters, often darting among coral structures and sandy areas where they forage for food.
