Product Details

The Powder Brown Tang is a beautiful and active species, known for its distinctive combination of deep brown body, white face mask, and bright orange dorsal fin. This tang is a favorite among marine aquarists due to its striking appearance and algae-grazing capabilities, making it a functional and visually appealing addition to large reef tanks. With its lively swimming behavior, the Powder Brown Tang requires a spacious environment to thrive.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 8 inches.
  • Tank Size: 125 gallons minimum; a large tank with plenty of swimming space is essential to meet their active nature and prevent territorial behavior.
  • Diet: Herbivorous; primarily feeds on algae, and should be offered a diet rich in marine-based seaweed, algae, and high-quality herbivore pellets. Supplementing with nori and fresh greens will help maintain their health.
  • Water Temp: 75-80°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Semi-aggressive; can become territorial, especially towards other tangs or similar species. Best kept in large tanks with peaceful tankmates to avoid aggressive behaviors.
  • Skill Level: Intermediate; while hardy, they are prone to common marine diseases like ich, so maintaining pristine water conditions is crucial.
  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe; does not harm corals or invertebrates and is excellent for controlling algae growth in reef environments.

Special Requirement - Spacious Tank for Active Swimming
The Powder Brown Tang is a highly active swimmer and requires a large, well-established tank with plenty of open swimming space and live rock for grazing. Providing ample space helps reduce stress and territorial behavior, ensuring a healthier, happier fish.

Coloration

  • Indo-Pacific Region: The Powder Brown Tang features a deep brown body, a striking white face mask, and a vivid orange dorsal fin. Its vibrant coloration and unique markings make it one of the more visually stunning tangs available for marine aquariums.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: The Powder Brown Tang is native to the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines. It inhabits shallow waters along reef slopes, where it grazes on algae.
