Powder Blue Tang - Maldive (Acanthurus Leucosternon)
Product Details

The Powder Blue Tang is one of the most beautiful and vibrant tang species available in the aquarium hobby. Known for its striking powder-blue body, black face mask, and bright yellow dorsal fin, this fish is a favorite among marine enthusiasts. Originating from the Maldives, these tangs are highly active swimmers and provide both visual appeal and functionality, as they help control algae in the tank.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 9 inches.
  • Tank Size: 125 gallons minimum; larger tanks are recommended to accommodate their active swimming behavior.
  • Diet: Herbivorous; primarily feeds on algae, and should be offered a diet rich in marine-based seaweed, algae, and high-quality herbivore pellets. Supplementing with fresh greens such as nori is essential for their health.
  • Water Temp: 75-80°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Generally peaceful but can become territorial towards other tangs, especially in smaller tanks. It is recommended to introduce them into larger tanks with other peaceful species.
  • Skill Level: Intermediate; requires stable water conditions and a varied diet rich in algae.
  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe; does not harm corals or invertebrates and is beneficial for controlling algae growth in reef tanks.

Special Requirement - Ample Swimming Space
Due to its highly active nature, the Powder Blue Tang requires a spacious tank with plenty of open swimming space. It is best suited for large, well-established tanks with a strong water flow and plenty of algae for grazing.

Coloration

  • Maldives: Specimens from the Maldives are particularly known for their vibrant blue coloration, contrasted by the bold black face mask and bright yellow dorsal fin. These features make the Powder Blue Tang one of the most striking fish in any marine tank.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: The Powder Blue Tang is native to the Indian Ocean, with a strong presence in the Maldives and surrounding waters. It inhabits coral reefs and rocky areas, where it grazes on algae along reef slopes
