Product Details

The Pintail Fairy Wrasse is a stunning, colorful fish that displays a beautiful blend of vibrant reds, blues, and purples. Known for its graceful swimming and active behavior, this wrasse is a favorite among reef tank owners. Its elongated and pointed tail fin gives it the name "Pintail," adding elegance to its already captivating appearance. While peaceful, it’s an active swimmer and requires plenty of open space to explore. This species is reef-safe and brings both color and personality to any well-established aquarium.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 4 inches.
  • Tank Size: 50 gallons minimum; a spacious tank with plenty of rockwork for hiding and swimming space is recommended for this active species.
  • Diet: Carnivorous; thrives on a diet of small meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. It will also accept high-quality frozen and pellet foods. Regular feedings of nutrient-rich foods are important to maintain its vibrant coloration and energy levels.
  • Water Temp: 74-78°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Peaceful; best kept with other peaceful tankmates. It can be housed in a community tank or a reef setup. Males may display some aggression towards other males of the same species, so it is best kept singly or in a harem with one male and multiple females.
  • Skill Level: Intermediate; relatively hardy and easy to care for with proper water conditions and diet.
  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe; does not harm corals or invertebrates, making it a great choice for reef tanks.

Special Requirement - Secure Lid
The Pintail Fairy Wrasse is a known jumper, especially when startled or during periods of high activity. A secure, tightly fitted lid is essential to prevent this fish from jumping out of the tank. Ensuring the tank environment is calm and stress-free, along with providing plenty of hiding spots, can help reduce jumping behavior.

Coloration

  • Indo-Pacific Region: The Pintail Fairy Wrasse exhibits a stunning mix of reds, blues, and purples, with males displaying more vibrant coloration than females. Its pointed tail adds a unique and elegant touch, making it one of the most visually striking wrasses available.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this wrasse is commonly found in coral reefs, where it swims freely and actively in search of small prey. It prefers environments with plenty of rockwork and open swimming areas.
