Goniopora corals are LPS species with elegant, long, flower-like polyps that sway gracefully in water currents. While historically challenging to maintain in captivity, improved techniques have made them more accessible to reef keepers. Their mesmerizing movement makes them a showpiece in any aquarium.

Care Requirements:

• Lighting:
  • Type: Moderate. Suitable lighting includes full-spectrum LEDs or T5s.
  • PAR Range: 100–150 PAR.
  • Gradual acclimation to higher light is essential to prevent bleaching. Place in mid-tank or shaded areas initially. Monitor for polyp extension as an indicator of proper placement.
• Flow:
  • Gentle to moderate flow is crucial. Goniopora corals extend their polyps better in stable, consistent currents.
  • Avoid direct, high-intensity flow, which can cause polyps to retract or damage the coral.
• Feeding:
  • Photosynthetic but requires regular supplemental feeding for long-term success.
  • Feed with small particulate foods such as reef roids, marine snow, or rotifers 2–3 times per week.
  • Target feeding enhances health and encourages robust polyp extension.
• Propagation:
  • Fragging Goniopora involves cutting the skeletal structure between polyps using a precision saw.
  • Ensure frag plugs are securely placed in areas with gentle flow and stable lighting to promote recovery. Healing may take several weeks.
