Product Details

The Peppermint Shrimp, Lysmata wurdemanni, is a popular and practical addition to reef tanks, prized for its natural ability to control pest Aiptasia anemones. Known for its pale translucent body with bold red stripes, this shrimp is both a functional and visually appealing invertebrate. Its peaceful nature and reef-safe behavior make it an excellent choice for community tanks, especially for aquarists looking for natural pest control.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 2 inches.
  • Tank Size: 10 gallons minimum; thrives in tanks with plenty of live rock for hiding and grazing.
  • Diet: Omnivorous; feeds on detritus, leftover food, and small meaty items. In addition to its natural diet, it may accept supplemental feedings of pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, and flake foods.
  • Water Temp: 72-78°F.
  • Salinity: 1.023-1.026.
  • Aggression: Peaceful; compatible with most reef-safe tankmates but may display mild territoriality toward other shrimp.
  • Skill Level: Beginner; hardy and easy to care for, making it ideal for aquarists of all experience levels.
  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe; does not harm corals or invertebrates but may scavenge on weakened or dying specimens.

Special Feature - Aiptasia Control
The Peppermint Shrimp is widely used for its ability to consume pest Aiptasia anemones. While not all individuals will target Aiptasia immediately, it is one of the few natural predators effective against these invasive anemones.

Compatibility
This shrimp is peaceful and thrives in community tanks with other non-aggressive invertebrates and reef-safe fish. Avoid housing it with large predatory fish, such as triggers or puffers, which may view it as prey.

Coloration

  • Caribbean Region: The Peppermint Shrimp features a pale translucent body with bold red stripes along its length, providing a subtle yet attractive appearance in reef aquariums.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: Native to the Western Atlantic and Caribbean, often found in rocky reef areas and crevices.
  • Tank Setup: Requires a stable environment with plenty of live rock for shelter and grazing.

Special Considerations

  • Aiptasia Feeding: While this shrimp is often employed to control Aiptasia, results can vary between individuals. For consistent results, provide supplemental food to maintain its health after Aiptasia populations are reduced.
  • Group Dynamics: Best kept singly or in small groups. Larger groups can sometimes lead to minor territorial disputes in smaller tanks.
  • Molting Sensitivity: Like all shrimp, Lysmata wurdemanni molts regularly. Ensure stable water conditions and provide iodine supplementation if necessary to support healthy molting cycles.
