Pacific Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma Velifer)
Product Details

The Pacific Sailfin Tang is a striking and highly recognizable marine species, known for its large, flowing dorsal and anal fins that resemble a sail, and its bold pattern of vertical yellow stripes over a dark brown or gray body. As it matures, the coloration becomes more pronounced, and its impressive fins expand even further, making it a stunning showpiece for large reef aquariums. The Pacific Sailfin Tang is also an excellent algae grazer, contributing to the health and cleanliness of the tank.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 15 inches.
  • Tank Size: 180 gallons minimum; due to its large size and active swimming behavior, a spacious tank with ample swimming space is essential.
  • Diet: Herbivorous; primarily feeds on algae and requires a diet rich in marine-based seaweed, algae, and high-quality herbivore pellets. Supplement with fresh greens like nori for optimal health.
  • Water Temp: 74-80°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Generally peaceful, but may become territorial towards other tangs, especially in smaller tanks. It is best to house them with similarly sized, peaceful tankmates.
  • Skill Level: Intermediate; requires a stable, well-maintained environment and a diet rich in algae.
  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe; does not harm corals or invertebrates and is a beneficial addition to reef tanks for algae control.

Special Requirement - Large Tank
Given its potential size and active swimming behavior, the Pacific Sailfin Tang requires a large aquarium with plenty of open swimming space and live rock for grazing. It is best suited for well-established tanks of 180 gallons or more.

Coloration

  • Indo-Pacific Region: The Pacific Sailfin Tang features vertical yellow and white stripes over a dark brown or gray body, with large, sail-like dorsal and anal fins that expand as the fish matures. The yellow highlights on the fins and body add to its vibrant and impressive appearance.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: The Pacific Sailfin Tang is native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the waters around the Great Barrier Reef, Indonesia, and the Philippines. It inhabits coral reefs and lagoons, where it grazes on algae and finds shelter among the rocks
