Ocellaris Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris)
Product Details

The Ocellaris Clownfish, also known as the Common Clownfish or False Percula Clownfish, is one of the most iconic and beloved marine fish species in the aquarium hobby. Known for its bright orange body with white bands outlined in black, this peaceful and hardy fish is perfect for both beginner and experienced aquarists. Its symbiotic relationship with sea anemones makes it a fascinating species to observe in reef aquariums.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 4 inches.
  • Tank Size: 20 gallons minimum, with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas.
  • Diet: Omnivorous; thrives on a varied diet of high-quality pellets, flakes, frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, and brine shrimp. Supplementing with marine algae and spirulina enhances coloration and overall health.
  • Water Temp: 74-80°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Generally peaceful, but can become territorial, especially in smaller tanks. Best kept with peaceful tankmates in reef or community aquariums.
  • Skill Level: Beginner; hardy and easy to care for, making it an ideal choice for aquarists of all levels.
  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe; does not harm corals or invertebrates and can live harmoniously with anemones.

Captive Bred Promotion - Avoid Wild-Caught Specimens
Captive-bred Ocellaris Clownfish are highly recommended over wild-caught specimens. Captive-bred fish are more accustomed to aquarium life, have a more consistent diet, and are less prone to diseases such as Brooklynella, a common and highly contagious parasite found in wild-caught clownfish. Choosing captive-bred specimens ensures healthier, hardier fish and helps protect wild populations.

Coloration

  • Indo-Pacific Region: Ocellaris Clownfish have a vibrant orange body with three white bands outlined in black. Captive-bred variants may show slight variations in coloration, but they maintain the same stunning appearance that makes them a favorite among aquarists.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: In the wild, Ocellaris Clownfish are found in the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific, particularly around coral reefs. They live symbiotically with sea anemones, providing them protection in exchange for shelter. However, captive-bred specimens thrive without needing an anemone.
