Product Details

The Marble Wrasse, also referred to as the Checkerboard Wrasse, is a visually stunning reef-safe species recognized for its intricate marbled or checkerboard pattern. Its mottled green, brown, and yellow body with faint, intricate markings adds a natural elegance to any marine aquarium. Known for its active behavior and functional pest control abilities, the Marble Wrasse is a hardy and versatile choice for reef or community tanks.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 5 inches.
  • Tank Size: 50 gallons minimum; requires a tank with a sandy substrate and plenty of rockwork for hiding and foraging.

  • Water Temp: 72-78°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Semi-peaceful; generally gets along with other peaceful tankmates but may show mild territorial behavior toward similar species.
  • Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate; hardy and adaptable, making it suitable for aquarists of all experience levels.
  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe with caution; typically does not harm corals, but may consume small ornamental shrimp and snails.

Special Requirements - Sand Substrate and Secure Lid
The Marble Wrasse is a burrower and requires a soft sand substrate to sleep and feel safe. Additionally, it is a known jumper, so a tightly fitted lid is necessary to prevent escape.

Compatibility
This wrasse is semi-peaceful and works well with a variety of tankmates in reef setups. Avoid housing it with other wrasses in small tanks, as it may display territorial behavior.

Coloration

  • Indo-Pacific Region: The Marble Wrasse is a vibrant yellow with subtle white markings and a black eyespot on its dorsal fin, making it a lively and attractive addition to any reef tank.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: Found in the Indo-Pacific, particularly on coral reefs and sandy areas, where it forages for invertebrates. In aquariums, it thrives in tanks with sandy substrates and stable conditions.
