Product Details

The Maculosus Angelfish, also known as the Yellowbar Angelfish, is a magnificent and large marine species known for its deep blue body and striking yellow vertical bar that runs along its side. This species is a popular choice for aquarists who are looking for a large, visually stunning angelfish to become a centerpiece in a large, well-maintained tank.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 18 inches.
  • Tank Size: 180 gallons minimum; larger tanks are recommended due to its potential size and active swimming behavior.
  • Diet: Omnivorous; thrives on a varied diet including marine sponges, high-quality angelfish pellets, mysis shrimp, and algae-based foods. Offering sponge-based food is important for their nutritional requirements.
  • Water Temp: 75-80°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Semi-aggressive; can become territorial, particularly with other large angelfish. It is advisable to introduce them carefully, especially in tanks with other large species.
  • Skill Level: Advanced; requires a well-maintained environment, stable water conditions, and proper diet.
  • Reef Compatibility: With caution; while they may nip at corals, especially soft corals and sponges, they are less aggressive than some other large angelfish.

Aggression Warning
Maculosus Angelfish can be territorial, particularly as they grow larger. It is recommended to keep only one large angelfish per tank unless you have a very large system with ample space for territories.

Color Variation by Locality

  • Red Sea: Specimens from the Red Sea display deep blue bodies with a prominent yellow bar that becomes more pronounced as the fish matures. The juvenile coloration typically consists of light blue stripes that evolve into adult patterns as the fish grows.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: The Maculosus Angelfish is native to the Red Sea and parts of the Arabian Gulf. It prefers coral-rich reefs and rocky areas where it can graze on sponges and algae. They are commonly found in depths of up to 40 meters
