Product Details

The Hooded Flame Wrasse is a stunning and rare species known for its vibrant red and orange hues, accented by a distinctive hood-like marking on the head. This species is highly sought after due to its bright colors and graceful swimming patterns, making it a perfect addition to well-maintained reef tanks. Males, in particular, display vivid coloration during mating and courtship displays.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 4 inches.
  • Tank Size: 50 gallons minimum, with plenty of open swimming space and rockwork for hiding.
  • Diet: Carnivorous; primarily feeds on mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and other high-quality frozen foods. A varied diet is essential for maintaining their vibrant coloration.
  • Water Temp: 74-78°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Generally peaceful but can become territorial, especially towards other wrasses. Best kept in pairs or harems, with one male and several females.
  • Skill Level: Intermediate; requires stable water conditions and a peaceful tank environment.
  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe; does not harm corals or invertebrates, making it an excellent addition to reef tanks.

Special Requirement - Secure Lid
Hooded Flame Wrasses, like many wrasses, are known jumpers. It is crucial to have a secure, tightly fitted lid on your aquarium to prevent them from jumping out, especially when startled or during displays of activity.

Color Variation by Locality

  • Western Pacific (Palau): Specimens from this region exhibit a brilliant combination of red and orange colors, with males displaying a deeper intensity of hues during courtship displays.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: The Hooded Flame Wrasse is found in the coral reefs of the Western Pacific, particularly around Palau and other Pacific islands. They are typically seen at depths of 100-150 feet, swimming among coral formations and reef slopes
