Gold Rim Tang (Acanthurus Acanthurus nigricans)
Product Details

The Gold Rim Tang, also known as the Whitecheek Tang, is a beautiful and highly active marine fish known for its dark brown-to-black body accented by a bright gold outline around its dorsal fin and a distinct white cheek patch. This elegant species is a fantastic addition to large aquariums, where it can thrive as both a visual centerpiece and an effective grazer of nuisance algae.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 8 inches.
  • Tank Size: 125 gallons minimum; requires a spacious tank with open swimming areas and live rock for grazing.
  • Diet: Herbivorous; thrives on a diet of marine algae, seaweed sheets, spirulina, and vegetable-based pellets. It will also accept supplemental feedings of mysis shrimp and brine shrimp.
  • Water Temp: 72-78°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Semi-aggressive; territorial with other tangs, especially those of similar shape and diet.
  • Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced; requires a large, stable environment and consistent diet to thrive.
  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe; does not harm corals but may graze on macroalgae.

Special Features - Gold Trim and Distinct Cheek Patch
The Gold Rim Tang is easily recognized by its golden edge along its dorsal and anal fins and a prominent white patch on its cheeks. Its striking coloration makes it a standout addition to reef and fish-only tanks.

Compatibility
This tang is semi-aggressive and best kept singly in most aquariums unless housed in a very large tank with other tangs. It coexists well with peaceful tankmates and other species but may display aggression toward similar-shaped fish.

Coloration

  • Indo-Pacific Region: The Gold Rim Tang features a deep brown-to-black body with bright gold trimming and a distinct white cheek patch, creating a sleek and elegant appearance.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: Found throughout the Indo-Pacific, particularly in coral reefs and lagoons where it grazes on algae.
  • Tank Setup: Requires a spacious environment with live rock for grazing and open swimming areas to accommodate its active nature.

Special Considerations

  • Dietary Needs: A primarily herbivorous diet is critical for its health. Provide ample marine algae and seaweed to mimic its natural grazing habits.
  • Territorial Behavior: While generally peaceful with other species, this tang can become territorial, especially toward other tangs. Ensure sufficient space and hiding spots to minimize aggression.
  • Disease Sensitivity: Like many tangs, the Gold Rim Tang is prone to marine ich and other parasites. Maintaining pristine water quality and using a quarantine process for new additions is highly recommended.
