Freckle Face Tang (Acanthurus Maculiceps)
Product Details

The Freckle Face Tang, also known as the Spotted Head Tang, is a striking and unique species known for its freckled face markings and vibrant coloration. With a combination of yellow, grey, and white hues, this tang is both a visual centerpiece and a functional addition to large reef or fish-only aquariums. It thrives in spacious setups where it can graze on algae and establish its territory.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 12 inches.
  • Tank Size: 180 gallons minimum; requires ample swimming space and live rock for grazing.
  • Diet: Herbivorous; feeds on marine algae, seaweed sheets, spirulina, and vegetable-based pellets. It will also accept meaty foods such as mysis shrimp and brine shrimp as supplements.
  • Water Temp: 72-78°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Semi-aggressive; territorial toward other tangs, particularly those with a similar shape or diet. Best kept singly unless in a very large tank.
  • Skill Level: Intermediate; requires a spacious and stable environment with a proper diet to thrive.
  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe; does not harm corals but may occasionally nip at macroalgae in reef tanks.

Special Features - Distinct Freckled Face and Grazing Behavior
The Freckle Face Tang is easily recognized by its spotted facial markings and vibrant yellow dorsal and tail fins. Its natural grazing behavior helps control algae growth, making it a functional addition to large reef setups.

Compatibility
This tang is semi-aggressive and can coexist with other peaceful fish. Avoid housing it with similarly shaped tangs or overly aggressive species. It thrives in tanks with a variety of non-aggressive tankmates and plenty of hiding spots.

Coloration

  • Indo-Pacific Region: The Freckle Face Tang features a grey body with subtle patterns, a yellow dorsal fin, and its signature freckled face. These striking markings stand out in larger reef or fish-only aquariums.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: Found in the Indo-Pacific, particularly in coral reef zones and rocky lagoons where it grazes on algae.
  • Tank Setup: Requires a stable environment with live rock for grazing and open areas for swimming.

Special Considerations

  • Dietary Needs: A primarily herbivorous diet is essential to maintain its health and coloration. Offer marine algae and seaweed daily to support its grazing habits.
  • Aggression: While generally peaceful with other species, this tang can become territorial, especially in smaller tanks or when housed with other tangs.
  • Tank Size: Due to its active swimming behavior and adult size, a large tank is crucial for its well-being and long-term health.
