Product Details

The Dussumieri Tang, also known as the Eye-Stripe Tang or Dussumier's Surgeonfish, is a large and strikingly beautiful marine fish that is well known for its bluish-gray body adorned with fine yellow lines and a distinctive eye stripe. As it matures, the Dussumieri Tang develops stunning colorations and patterns that make it a standout in any large aquarium. This species is also an efficient algae grazer, making it a practical and aesthetic addition to reef tanks.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 16 inches.
  • Tank Size: 250 gallons minimum; due to its large size and active swimming habits, a spacious tank with plenty of swimming room is essential.
  • Diet: Herbivorous; primarily feeds on algae and should be offered a diet rich in marine-based seaweed, algae, and high-quality herbivore pellets. Supplement with nori and fresh greens to maintain optimal health.
  • Water Temp: 74-80°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Generally peaceful but can become territorial with other tangs, especially in smaller tanks. It is best kept in large aquariums with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates.
  • Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced; requires a large, stable environment and a diet that meets its high nutritional needs.
  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe; does not harm corals or invertebrates and is beneficial for algae control in reef tanks.

Special Requirement - Large Tank
The Dussumieri Tang is a very large and active fish, requiring an aquarium of at least 250 gallons to accommodate its full size and swimming needs. It is best suited for large, established tanks with plenty of live rock and open swimming areas.

Coloration

  • Indo-Pacific Region: Juvenile Dussumieri Tangs are typically bluish-gray, while adults develop intricate yellow lines and a distinct eye stripe as they mature. The coloration becomes more pronounced with age, adding to their striking appearance.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: The Dussumieri Tang is native to the Indo-Pacific, commonly found in coral reefs and rocky areas of the Indian Ocean, including regions around Hawaii, Japan, and the Great Barrier Reef. They prefer shallow to moderately deep waters where they can graze on algae.
