Diamond Watchman Goby (Valenciennea puellaris)
Product Details

The Diamond Watchman Goby, also known as the Orange Spotted Goby, is a highly functional and visually appealing addition to reef and community aquariums. This goby is known for its striking white body adorned with orange spots and vibrant blue accents, as well as its utility in keeping sandbeds clean. With its natural sifting behavior, the Diamond Watchman Goby aerates the substrate while foraging for food, promoting a healthy tank ecosystem.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 6 inches.
  • Tank Size: 30 gallons minimum; requires a tank with a sandy substrate and rockwork for hiding and burrowing.
  • Diet: Carnivorous; primarily feeds on small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped marine fare. It also grazes on organisms within the sandbed. Supplemental feedings with sinking pellets or frozen foods are essential.
  • Water Temp: 72-78°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Peaceful; suitable for community tanks but may become territorial toward other sand-dwelling gobies.
  • Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate; hardy and adaptable but requires a well-maintained sandbed and consistent feeding.
  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe; does not harm corals or invertebrates and is beneficial for sandbed maintenance.

Special Features - Sand-Sifting Behavior
The Diamond Watchman Goby actively sifts through the sand, removing detritus and uneaten food while aerating the substrate. This natural behavior contributes to a healthier and more balanced tank environment.

Compatibility
This goby is peaceful and thrives in community tanks with other non-aggressive species. It should not be housed with overly aggressive fish or large predators. It may pair with a pistol shrimp to form a symbiotic relationship, although it is not dependent on this.

Coloration

  • Indo-Pacific Region: The Diamond Watchman Goby features a white body covered in orange spots, with blue accents along its dorsal fin and cheeks, making it a visually striking addition to any tank.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: Found throughout the Indo-Pacific, particularly in sandy and rubble zones of coral reefs where it burrows and forages.
  • Tank Setup: Requires a sandy substrate for burrowing and sifting, along with ample live rock for shelter and security.

Special Considerations - Lid Requirement
This species is prone to jumping, especially when startled. A secure lid or mesh cover is essential to prevent escape.
