Product Details

The Desjardini Sailfin Tang, native to the Indian Ocean and Indonesia, is a stunning and highly sought-after tang species known for its elegant, sail-like dorsal and anal fins and its unique coloration. This tang features bold vertical stripes and intricate spots on its body, with a mix of black, white, and yellow hues that stand out in any aquarium. It is a hardy and active species, perfect for larger reef or fish-only tanks, where it also provides the benefit of algae control.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 15 inches.
  • Tank Size: 180 gallons minimum; requires a spacious tank with plenty of swimming space and rockwork for grazing.
  • Diet: Herbivorous; thrives on a diet of marine algae, seaweed sheets, spirulina, and vegetable-based pellets. It also accepts frozen mysis shrimp and other meaty foods as supplements.
  • Water Temp: 72-78°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Semi-aggressive; territorial with other tangs, especially those of similar shape and color. Best kept singly unless in very large tanks.
  • Skill Level: Intermediate; requires a large tank, proper diet, and stable water conditions to thrive.
  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe; does not harm corals or invertebrates, but may nip at certain macroalgae.

Special Features - Sail-Like Fins and Unique Pattern
The Desjardini Sailfin Tang is easily recognizable by its dramatic sail-like fins, which are boldly marked with vertical stripes and spots. Its coloration is more vivid in juveniles and can slightly fade as it matures, especially in captivity.

Compatibility
This tang is generally peaceful but can display territorial aggression toward other tangs, particularly in smaller tanks. It thrives in community setups with other peaceful to semi-aggressive fish. Avoid housing it with aggressive species that may outcompete or harass it.

Coloration

  • Indonesian Population: This tang showcases a mix of black, white, and yellow coloration with vertical stripes and spots on its body and fins. The pattern on its dorsal and anal fins creates an intricate, eye-catching display.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: Found in the Indian Ocean, including Indonesia, particularly in coral reefs and lagoon areas where it grazes on algae.
  • Tank Setup: Requires a spacious tank with plenty of live rock for grazing and open swimming areas.

Special Considerations

  • Algae Control: The Desjardini Sailfin Tang is an excellent natural grazer, helping to control algae growth in the tank. Providing seaweed or algae sheets regularly will support its health and dietary needs.
  • Tank Size Importance: Due to its active swimming behavior and large adult size, a large tank is essential for its long-term well-being.
  • Social Behavior: Best kept singly or in very large tanks if housed with other tangs to avoid territorial disputes.
