Coral Cat Shark (Atelomycterus Marmoratus)
Product Details

The Coral Cat Shark is a strikingly patterned bottom-dwelling shark that is highly prized for its marbled black-and-brown coloration and elegant swimming behavior. Native to shallow tropical reefs in the Indo-Pacific, this species is a hardy and fascinating addition to very large aquariums. As a relatively small species of shark, it is well-suited to advanced aquarists with the ability to provide a spacious, stable environment to meet its needs.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 28 inches (70 cm).
  • Tank Size: 300 gallons minimum; requires a long and wide tank with plenty of open swimming space and soft, sandy substrate to prevent injuries.
  • Diet: Carnivorous; feeds on a variety of meaty foods such as squid, shrimp, clams, and fish. Frozen or fresh seafood is ideal. Feed 2-3 times per week in small portions to avoid overfeeding.
  • Water Temp: 74-80°F.
  • Salinity: 1.021-1.025.
  • Aggression: Peaceful; generally non-aggressive but may prey on small fish or crustaceans if housed inappropriately.
  • Skill Level: Advanced; requires a large, stable aquarium and specific care to thrive.
  • Reef Compatibility: With caution; safe with corals but may consume small fish or invertebrates in a reef setting.

Special Features - Unique Pattern and Graceful Behavior
The Coral Cat Shark is known for its beautiful marbled pattern of dark and light brown shades, which provide excellent camouflage in its natural reef environment. Its smooth, gliding movements add an aura of elegance to large aquariums.

Compatibility
This shark is peaceful but should not be housed with very small fish or invertebrates that may be considered prey. It coexists well with larger, non-aggressive tankmates in a spacious environment. Avoid housing it with overly aggressive or territorial species.

Coloration

  • Indo-Pacific Region: The Coral Cat Shark’s body is patterned with intricate marbled bands of dark brown and cream, creating a stunning visual contrast that blends beautifully with its sandy or rocky surroundings.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: Found in shallow reef lagoons and sandy flats in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around coral-rich areas.
  • Tank Setup: Requires a stable tank with fine sand to protect its delicate underbelly, plenty of swimming room, and minimal sharp objects to prevent injury.

Special Considerations

  • Tank Size and Setup: Due to its active swimming behavior and size, this species requires a large, open aquarium. Ensure the tank is well-covered, as it can jump if startled.
  • Dietary Requirements: A well-balanced carnivorous diet is essential. Offer a variety of fresh or frozen seafood to maintain health and coloration. Avoid feeding oily or fatty foods, which can lead to poor water quality.
  • Water Quality Sensitivity: This species is sensitive to water quality. Maintain pristine conditions and perform regular water changes to ensure its long-term health.
  • Breeding: In captivity, females may lay egg cases, often referred to as “mermaid’s purses,” which can hatch under optimal conditions if fertilized.
