Chocolate Tang (Acanthurus Pyoferus)
Product Details

The Chocolate Tang, also known as the Mimic Tang, is a stunning and versatile fish that is often mistaken for other species during its juvenile stage due to its unique coloration. Juvenile Chocolate Tangs can mimic the appearance of angelfish species, such as the Lemonpeel Angelfish, but as they mature, they develop a more uniform brownish-gray coloration with yellow accents. This tang is highly sought after for its adaptability, peaceful nature, and ability to control algae in reef tanks.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 10 inches.
  • Tank Size: 100 gallons minimum; larger tanks are recommended to provide ample swimming space and room for grazing on algae.
  • Diet: Herbivorous; primarily feeds on algae and should be offered marine-based seaweed, algae, and high-quality herbivore pellets. Supplementing with nori or fresh greens is beneficial for maintaining its health.
  • Water Temp: 74-80°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Generally peaceful but may become territorial towards other tangs, especially in smaller tanks. It is best to keep them with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates in large aquariums.
  • Skill Level: Intermediate; requires stable water conditions and a balanced diet.
  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe; does not harm corals or invertebrates, making it an excellent choice for reef aquariums where algae control is needed.

Special Adaptability - Mimicry
In its juvenile stage, the Chocolate Tang is known for its mimicry, often resembling angelfish species like the Lemonpeel Angelfish (Centropyge flavissimus). This mimicry helps it avoid predators while young. As it matures, the tang develops its adult coloration, which is a more subdued brown with yellow accents around the fins.

Coloration

  • Indo-Pacific Region: Juveniles often display a bright yellow or orange body with black markings that mimic angelfish, while adults turn a more uniform chocolate brown with yellow highlights. This fascinating color change adds interest to any reef aquarium.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: The Chocolate Tang is found in the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the Philippines, Indonesia, and the Great Barrier Reef. It prefers shallow waters where it can graze on algae, contributing to a balanced reef ecosystem.
