Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 4 inches.
  • Tank Size: 50 gallons minimum; larger tanks are preferred to accommodate their active swimming behavior.
  • Diet: Carnivorous; primarily feeds on small invertebrates, zooplankton, and high-quality frozen or live foods. A varied diet is essential for their health.
  • Water Temp: 74-78°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.

  • Skill Level: Intermediate; requires stable water conditions and compatible tank mates.
  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe; does not harm corals or invertebrates, making it an excellent choice for reef environments.

Special Requirement - Sand Substrate and Secure Lid
The Blue Star Leopard Wrasse requires a sandy substrate in the aquarium, as it buries itself in the sand at night to sleep and when it feels threatened. Providing a soft, sandy area is essential for their natural behavior and well-being. Additionally, like many wrasses, they are known jumpers, so a secure, tightly fitted lid is necessary to prevent them from jumping out of the tank.

Color Variation by Locality

  • Western Indian Ocean: Specimens from this region often display the most vibrant colors, with distinct patterns that may vary slightly based on local environmental conditions.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: The Blue Star Leopard Wrasse is commonly found in the coral reefs of the Western Indian Ocean, particularly around Eastern Africa and the Seychelles. They thrive in shallow waters, often associating with sandy substrates where they can forage and hide
