Blue Ring Angelfish (Pomacanthus Annularis)
Product Details

The Blue Ring Angelfish is a striking marine fish known for its vibrant coloration and bold personality. With its electric blue and yellow body, highlighted by the iconic circular blue rings across its body, this angelfish makes a show-stopping addition to large aquariums. It is hardy and adaptable but requires a spacious tank with ample live rock for grazing and plenty of hiding spots to feel secure. The Blue Ring Angelfish is best suited for experienced aquarists due to its size and diet requirements.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 15 inches.
  • Tank Size: 180 gallons minimum; requires a spacious tank with plenty of swimming room and rockwork for grazing and shelter.
  • Diet: Omnivorous; primarily feeds on sponges, algae, and small invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, it accepts high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and algae-based foods. Supplementing with marine sponge foods and nori will help maintain health and coloration.
  • Water Temp: 72-78°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Semi-aggressive; generally peaceful with non-aggressive species but may become territorial with other large angelfish or similar tankmates.
  • Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced; requires a stable tank environment, specialized diet, and ample swimming space.
  • Reef Compatibility: With caution; it may nip at corals, clams, and other invertebrates, making it better suited for fish-only tanks or carefully planned reef tanks.

Special Requirements - Rockwork and Space
The Blue Ring Angelfish requires ample live rock for grazing and shelter, as well as open swimming areas to accommodate its active nature. A mature tank with stable water conditions is essential for its health and longevity.

Compatibility
This angelfish can cohabit with a variety of large, non-aggressive tankmates. Avoid housing it with other large angelfish unless the tank is sufficiently spacious to prevent territorial disputes.

Coloration

  • Indo-Pacific Region: The Blue Ring Angelfish displays a vibrant yellow-to-orange body accented with bright electric blue rings that radiate outward. Juveniles have a different pattern with curved blue and white lines, adding to the fascination of this species’ transformation as it matures.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: Found throughout the Indo-Pacific, particularly in coral-rich reef areas and lagoons. In aquariums, it thrives in mature tanks with plenty of rock structures and consistent water quality.
