Product Details

The Blue Line Rabbitfish, also known as the Masked Rabbitfish, is a visually stunning marine species known for its intricate pattern of blue lines and yellow highlights. Its peaceful nature and algae-grazing habits make it both a beautiful and functional addition to reef tanks. This species is popular among aquarists for its vibrant colors and ability to help control algae growth.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 10 inches.
  • Tank Size: 120 gallons minimum; larger tanks are recommended to provide ample space for swimming and grazing.
  • Diet: Herbivorous; primarily feeds on algae and should be provided with a diet that includes marine-based seaweed, algae, and high-quality herbivore pellets. Supplementing with fresh greens such as nori is beneficial.
  • Water Temp: 75-80°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Generally peaceful, making it a great addition to community tanks. However, it may be territorial towards other rabbitfish or similar species in smaller tanks.
  • Skill Level: Intermediate; requires stable water conditions and plenty of algae for grazing.
  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe; does not harm corals or invertebrates but may nibble on soft corals if underfed or lacking algae. Keeping it well-fed reduces the risk of coral nipping.

Special Note - Venomous Spines
The Blue Line Rabbitfish has venomous spines that it uses for defense. While generally peaceful, caution should be taken when handling or moving the fish, as its dorsal and anal spines can deliver a painful sting if touched.

Coloration

  • Indo-Pacific Region: This rabbitfish features intricate blue lines running horizontally across its body, with a mix of yellow and orange accents around the face and fins. The vivid coloration and detailed pattern make it a visually captivating fish in any aquarium.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: The Blue Line Rabbitfish is commonly found in coral reefs and lagoons throughout the Indo-Pacific, including areas like the Philippines, Indonesia, and the Great Barrier Reef. It prefers shallow waters with plenty of algae for grazing.
