Product Details

The Blue Hippo Tang, also known as the Regal Tang or Palette Surgeonfish, is one of the most recognizable and beloved species in the marine aquarium hobby. With its striking blue body, yellow tail, and black "palette" pattern along its sides, this tang is a stunning and active addition to any reef aquarium. Known for its vibrant colors and lively swimming behavior, the Blue Hippo Tang is a favorite among aquarists.

Care Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 12 inches.
  • Tank Size: 180 gallons minimum; larger tanks are recommended to provide ample swimming space, as this is an active species that enjoys open areas.
  • Diet: Herbivorous; primarily feeds on algae, but a well-rounded diet should include seaweed, marine algae, and high-quality herbivore pellets. Supplementing with meaty foods like mysis shrimp and brine shrimp is beneficial for their health.
  • Water Temp: 74-80°F.
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025.
  • Aggression: Generally peaceful, but can become territorial, especially in smaller tanks or if housed with other tangs. Best kept with peaceful tankmates in a large tank with plenty of swimming space.
  • Skill Level: Intermediate; while hardy, this species is susceptible to common marine diseases like ich, so maintaining pristine water conditions is crucial.
  • Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe; does not harm corals or invertebrates, making it a great choice for reef tanks.

Special Requirement - Tank Size
Given its potential size and active swimming behavior, the Blue Hippo Tang requires a large tank with plenty of open space to swim. Tanks should have ample rockwork for hiding but also allow for free movement.

Coloration

  • Indo-Pacific Region: The Blue Hippo Tang features a bright blue body with a yellow tail and a bold black "palette" pattern on its side. These colors remain vibrant throughout their lifespan, making them a visually stunning fish in any tank.

Typical Habitat

  • Distribution: The Blue Hippo Tang is native to the Indo-Pacific region, where it inhabits coral reefs and rocky areas. It is commonly found swimming in schools along reef slopes, where it grazes on algae.
